What is Parkinson's disease?
Parkinson's is a neurodegenerative disease. Our body's movement is normally controlled by dopamine, a chemical that carries signals between the nerves in the brain. When the cells that normally produce dopamine die, the symptoms of Parkinson's appear.
The most common symptoms of Parkinson's disease include:
tremors
slowness and stiffness
impaired balance
rigidity of the muscles
Other symptoms include:
fatigue
soft speech
problems with handwriting
stooped posture
constipation
sleep disturbances
Parkinson's disease symptoms are treated with medication and, in some cases, surgery. Other therapies that aid in symptom management include:
physical therapy to increase mobility, flexibility and balance
occupational therapy for help with daily activities
speech therapy for voice control
exercise to help muscles and joints and improve overall health and well-being
Parkinson's disease develops at a different rate for each person. As the disease progresses, non-motor symptoms may also appear, such as depression, difficulty swallowing, sexual difficulty and cognitive changes. A primary care doctor monitors symptoms regularly and adjusts medications, as needed.
While there is no cure, the natural therapies outlined above can help slow the progression of the disease and improve the functioning and quality of life of a Parkinson's patient. Due to the complexity of the disease and its chronic and progressive nature, it is crucial that a team of health care professionals are assembled early on so that ongoing support is easily accessible―both for the Parkinson's sufferer and his/her loved ones.

Chiropractic care can be especially helpful to people with Parkinson's disease. Chiropractors like Dr. Noble and Dr. Fera are specially trained in the functioning of the joints, muscles and nervous system (the neuromusculoskeletal system).
Since Parkinson's affects muscle function and joint movement, there is a high incidence of joint dysfunction in patients suffering from the disease. Chiropractic treatment can help with the pain associated with joint dysfunction and create healthier movement patterns that result in greater ease of movement. Dr. Noble and Dr. Fera can also provide specific exercises to enhance flexibility and strength. Recent studies confirm that Parkinson's patients benefit greatly from chiropractic care.

In addition to seeing a neurologist to oversee pharmacological treatment and coordinate care, Parkinson's patients should also assemble a support network of friends, relatives and counsellors. The disease can take a toll not only on the patient, but also on family members and friends. By taking the time to establish a support network early on, support and treatment can be delivered more effectively.
